Our top tips to help your Somerset roof repair or installation goes perfectly

Getting a brand new roof can be an exciting moment. It can be quite a spectacle as your chosen roofer rips the old roof off and starts the process of building and laying your new roof. One of the most important aspects of having work done on your roof is the safety of the roofers and any people who live or come to the property when works are being done.

It's important to remember that your property will be a building zone during the period that any roofing work is being done. Having a newly installed roof can pose unexpected hazards which is why we hope this checklist will help you to ensure the safety of your property, pets, family, the team of roofers and any visitors to the area.

Here are our tips for getting ready for when your new roof or roof repairs are to take place and to make the process go as smooth as possible.

Children and Pets

Loud noises coming from around the property may increase anxiety or disturb sleep habits. While it may startout to be fun to watch from a safe distance the noise can be disturbing and persistent while roofing repairs are taking place.

Since young children and pets may not understand these dangers, you may be more comfortable vacating the property while your roof is replaced. Due to the risk of failing debris we always suggest keeping pets and children away from the property vehicle work is being carried out.

Vehicle safety and access during a roof repair or installation

When working on a property it is essential that there is easy access for the roofing company to get to any tools, materials and equipment that they need to work on the property.

Parking access is required and we suggest that you relocate your vehicles to ensure that any falling debris does not cause damage to them.

Remove wall decorations during an roof work

Vibrations from hammering and equipment will travel through some of the walls of your home especially if there needs to be replacement wood work down to the frame.

We suggest walking through the rooms directly below your roof and removing any valuables, pictures, ornaments that may be sat on shelves, hanging from your walls or attached to your ceiling.

It may also be advisable to remove any light fixtures.

Cover belongings in the attic during a roof replacement

There will be a lot of footfall across your roof during a roof repair or new roof installation. Along with the hammering and machinery that will be in use it is always advisable to cover any items in the attic to avoid dust and debris.

Using old sheets or drop cloths will help keep personal items cleaner until the roof work has been done.

Move garden furniture away from the work area

Falling debris from your roof repair can cause damage to your garden area which is why we advise to clear any garden furniture, potted plants, awnings, umbrellas, bbq's and play equipment. It is preferable to ensure your pets also only go in the garden when advised it is safe to do so and that any children are also made aware that the garden area is to be clear during working hours.

Cut Trees and Grass before construction begins

Low hanging branches can cause issues when working on roofing jobs. We always suggest that any branches that hang low should be trimmed before we begin work.

We try to use drop cloths to protect plants and grass in the immediate vicinity of any work we are doing. If the grass is short this allows for better clean up as debris won't be hidden in the lawn.

Remove antennas or satellite dishes

If you have tv antenna or a satellite dish attached to your property there are occasions when it may be required to remove these items to avoid damage.

If you believe this may be required please get in touch with us prior to any work starting and we can advise the best course of action

Chat with your neighbors

We always advise our clients to let their neighbours know that roofing work is about to done. Giving them a timeframe for when the work will be completed will give them an opportunity to adjust their schedule and ensure their property is protected prior to the work going on.

Be aware of the construction site during the roof repairs

Having work done at your own property can be dangerous. There are often unexpected obstacles like extension leads, ladders and other heavy equipment. Walking under scaffolding or exits whilst work is being carried out can be dangerous and although your safety is important to us we won't always know you are there.

Just remember the disruption and inconvenience are just temporary and the results will be well worth it.
